How you can help

We would like your help...

Patients at State hospitals and clinics in South Africa are typically destitute, malnourished, as well as being very sick or injured. Many are jobless, many are homeless, and many have no loved-ones to provide the basic needs for them in hospital.

The Ruth Mailbag Group strives to provide for the needs of destitute moms and babies in the maternity and NICU of our local state hospital and several other hospitals in our country who have asked for our help by providing them with a basic baby pack for their new and or sick babies.

If you can assist please get in touch with us through joy.coetzee@gmail.com or visit our blog at http://theruthmailbaggroup.blogspot.com/ for more information.

Yours sincerely,
Joy Coetzee

NEWSLETTER – 19 APRIL 2012

APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE - QUADRUPLETS: Mrs Sandi Ndlovu had quadruplets at our local provincial hospital over a month ago, the family are very poor and need all the help they can get... Mom is a housewife, dad is a piece job worker, they have 2 other small children at home, and they live in a rural informal area... If you are in a position to assist this family please contact the PRO at the Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, Thabo Sithole, on 036 637 2111 or cell number 084 555 2427 with the details and/or your proposal. Thanking you in anticipation!!!

THANK YOU: Mr J Wu, Francis T., Mariette v. S., Barbara H., Pam (Deb’s mom), One Stop, Department Rural Development and Land Affairs, Colleen Raciborska, Barbara H., Pam C. and Steve T. for liaising with Knit a Square and co-ordinating the transporting of their donations to us, Judy M., Rosemary, Eileen, Retha, Karin S., Denise, Lynn, Mr Strauss, Gerty, Doreen, family and friends.

Thank you, Johnny, for taking a whole load of things through to Ikhaya Lethu at Colenso. You remain a very important part of this group. Once again, thank you for your time and kindness. Your support is always appreciated.

We greatly appreciate all of our donors and volunteers, without you our group would not exist. Please know that if your name was left off our list it was unintentional and all of your efforts are valued and appreciated.

GIFTING: On the 18TH March to 23 newborn and 24 preemie babies; on 26thMarch 40 packs with special thanks to Knit a Square for their generous contribution. Moms loved all the bright and cheerful colours. Most timeous as the first snow fell on the Drakensberg early on the 24th March!!! On the 27th a special delivery to the quadruplets, 2 very large gift bags full of basic baby friendly items and a couple of items especially for mom; on the 9th April blankets to 44 babies and Easter eggs for the moms and staff and on the 15th April to 29 babies and a large nappy bag full of tiny baby items to the quadruplets.

EASTER PROJECT:

We started the Easter gifting with a visit to the paediatrics wards at the Provincial hospital. Each child was given a beanie & scarf, a toy and some Easter eggs and each baby was given a blanket and a soft toy, all moms and the staff on duty also received Easter eggs. It was a very pleasant visit made easier by help from the staff on the wards. Thank you to all who contributed in anyway, you made it possible, without you we could not have undertaken this project. A special thank you to the "Easter bunnies" Retha, Barbara and Mark for their help, without you I could not have done it. Once again, thank you for your support!!!

I also visited the moms and babies on Easter Monday, the babies each received a blanket and the moms and staff on duty was given Easter eggs. It was a happy visit as always.

I packed little bags of Easter eggs for the oldies at the Juana Maria home for the frail aged... the eggs were so deliciously soft that even the oldest residents will have enjoyed a bite! A special thank you to Frances who was the “Easter bunny” on this occasion, without you I could not have done the rounds. Thank you, to all who contributed to this project, your support is much appreciated!

MÔRESTER HAS COME ON BOARD, TOO: While waiting to see my dentist recently one of the ladies told me that there were needs at Môrester especially among the babies up to 2 years of age. I went back to my stock and found jersey’s, socks and hats to give them. I made contact with their PRO, Tina, who kindly collected the goodies and we received a very sweet thank you note from her the next day.

World Wide Knit in Public Day: Due to lack of interest, we will not host this occasion in our town this year.

GROUP COORDINATORS: We are looking for group coordinators in Port Shepstone, Stanger, Pongola and Nqutu to support those hospitals on our list. If you are interested in hosting a group, please, let us know! http://www.knysnaplettherald.com/news.aspx?id=4498

UPDATE FROM CAROLYN: Well I am still a 1 man group, but busy knitting away every night bootie and hat sets mounting up. Have approached my local lions for wool or clothing donations and am waiting on a response. A local shopping centre is going to add us to their charity beneficiary list for their baby comp held in October. And will let us connect with round table who have their blanket drive then as well in June/July. Have made contact with Karen and will be going for a site visit soon, she seems like a lovely lady doing great things and I am very happy to support her. My folks are moving house and mum is a fabric hoarder so taking advantage of her great throw out and will make quilts with her fabric loot. The resort where I work has been very busy lately with Easter holidays so Busfare babies have been on the back burner for now but am now able to start up the engine again and hopefully next report will be more exciting! Sorry about the grammar I am using my phone and feeling a bit squashed on the screen so apologies. Carolyn

For a 1-man group you are doing amazing work and I know that you and Karen are going to work well together. Keep up the good work and we look forward to hearing from you again, soon!

WELCOME GROUP CO-ORDINATORS: Watch this space!!!

WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

FREE SAMPLES/TRAVEL SIZE ITEMS: Each week our group gifts up to 40 newborn and premature babies at the state hospital. In these baby packs we place basic items for the baby’s well being e.g. creams, lotions, clothing, and a little something for the mom, too, as the vast majority of the mothers who give birth to their babies at the state hospital are destitute. The moms are most appreciative of the assistance we give them. All gifts are given free of any charge and that is why we have to solicit donations to support our cause. Please help us if at all possible.

PLEASE MENTION OUR GROUP on your blog, in your groups, ask your church / school to mention us in their newsletters, ask your local community newspaper to mention us in their publication. Thank you in anticipation for your support!!!

MEETING HELD IN APRIL – Was most pleasant at our new venue at the Mary Catherine it was also good to see new faces. The new format made for more participation from members. Yarn donations received were shared among members and some was also given to Doreen and her group and the Methodist WA. We all look forward to seeing what sweet little creations you were able to make. Thank you for donations and as always the show and tell was enjoyed by all. We do so enjoy seeing each other’s creations and hard work. Thank you to Pam for refreshments and Sharyn for the new venue, we all enjoyed the afternoon together.

PACKAGES MAILED: I have sent a box of capsto Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital at Nqutu; on checking the tracking I have discovered that it was collected but I have not heard from the hospital.

NEW HOSPITAL LISTING: No new listings at this stage.

Please mark all packages “FOR CHARITY – NO RETAIL VALUE”. I recommend that you write or other staff member”after the name on the mailing.

When you send items to hospitals, please send us photos of your beautiful little items and in turn, if the hospitals can send us pictures of the gifting done at their hospitals we can share them on our facebook page for all to enjoy. Thank you.

Kindly note that all Ruth Mailbag items are given free to infants, children and their parents!!!

GIFT TAGS: Raising awareness of our organization helps us to not only celebrate more volunteers but also let others know we can help them. Please send me an email (joy.coetzee@gmail.com) to request gift tags to use when donating. Thank you for helping me to spread the word about the needs of young hospital patients and others in need.
