How you can help

We would like your help...

Patients at State hospitals and clinics in South Africa are typically destitute, malnourished, as well as being very sick or injured. Many are jobless, many are homeless, and many have no loved-ones to provide the basic needs for them in hospital.

The Ruth Mailbag Group strives to provide for the needs of destitute moms and babies in the maternity and NICU of our local state hospital and several other hospitals in our country who have asked for our help by providing them with a basic baby pack for their new and or sick babies.

If you can assist please get in touch with us through joy.coetzee@gmail.com or visit our blog at http://theruthmailbaggroup.blogspot.com/ for more information.

Yours sincerely,
Joy Coetzee

POSTAL INSTRUCTIONS

POSTAL INSTRUCTIONS

CUSTOMS DUTY
VERY IMPORTANT: We would ask you to take special notice of these instructions to avoid unnecessary duty being paid on your parcels as they arrive in South Africa.

Please mark clearly: No Commercial Value - For Charity Only.

Please do not register your letters, parcels, packages or boxes.

Please do not give a monetary value on your parcels (or only the minimum amount as instructed by your post office)

We have to pay minimal duty on most large parcels arriving. However even just a small monetary value on a parcel attracts far higher duties. Letters, parcels, packages and boxes continue to arrive safely in volumes without any registration or monetary values appended to them.

MOISTURE FREE
Wrap your crocheted, knitted and sewn items in a plastic bag, bubble wrap or by postal bags with an inner plastic coating to keep them moisture proof. Tape your parcels well.

POSTAL ADDRESS
Address all your post to: The Ruth Mailbag Group, No Commercial Value - For Charity Only, C/o Foto First, 27 Francis Road, Ladysmith 3370, South Africa.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Please add a note with your name, address or email address so that I may acknowledge your parcel.

NEWSLETTER 9/2012

NEWSLETTER 9/2012

I just wanted to take a minute to say welcome!

To join simply means to help. Once you create an item and give it to an individual or organization, you have joined. Please help!

Please refer to the Hospital List that is included on our blog. The Ruth Mailbag Group is already assisting the hospitals that are listed. For your convenience, the hospital name and address, the name of a staff liaison person, and the list of items that hospital wishes to receive are all compiled on the hospital list. You may send items directly to one of the participating hospitals or you may contact a hospital in your own community. To learn the needs of your local hospital, contact the Public Relations Officer.

Yarn that may be washed in hot water with harsh detergents and disinfectants should be used for projects. Feel free to vary colours with the season. Holiday colours, sports team colours, multi-colour stripes, and pastels may be used.

It is recommended that you package completed items in plastic bags in order to ensure freshness and cleanliness of each item. Do not add potpourri, sachet, or any fragrances. Do not use fabric softeners, if you wash completed items.

As more and more people learn of the needs of neonatal intensive care units at children's hospitals, some hospitals may be "flooded" with very tiny hats. Please consider making blankets, mittens, or other items and if you make hats, make an assortment of sizes. There are full-term infants in NICUs/ICUs, too.

Keep in touch by reading the newsletters found on our blog.

Include your name and address on a Ruth Mailbag Group label in each package that you send or deliver to a hospital.

Please let me know if I can be of any help.

THANK YOU:  Mrs Marion Short, Sandra Staples and friends, Marian Herbert, Mrs Selvi Gough, Margaret Woodhouse, Christine (from our Ravelry group), W M Collantine, Mr Strauss, Lee, Oosthuizen and Smith Inc., Elna and friends.

We greatly appreciate all of our donors and volunteers, without you our group would not exist. Please know that if your name was left off our list it was unintentional and all of your efforts are valued and appreciated.

LETTERS I LOVE RECEIVING:

LYDIA ANN JARMAN: I had the most heartwarming experience going to this school. They did not even have a dirty broken teddy or car not a toy in sight when I arrived they did not know why I was there the teacher tried to make it orderly but when they saw the toys there was no holding back they were screaming with joy. They sang for me and the excitement was over whelming. After all the thank you's I left and cried so much that I could not see the road. It was more tears of joy I think I was so happy to have brought joy into all these little kids’ lives. There is still a lot to do and help them with it is difficult for me as I don’t really know many people in this area. But am working on getting a lot more people involved. I would just like to thank all the people involved in putting all these toys together thank you from the bottom of my heart.

GIFTING:   I have been staying away from the hospital as I have not been well and did not wish to share my germs with the precious little babies…

MEETING:  Thank you, for a lovely meeting, so sorry that some of our stalwarts could not join us, we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting. To those who are not well at this time, get well soon, we miss you! Your donations are all beautiful and very much appreciated. For a small group we still manage to surprise ourselves with the amount of work we are able to do each month. God bless you, one and all.

PROJECTS:

CHRISTMAS IN JULY: Was a huge success with toys and Christmassy items being donated.

MANDELA DAY:

RETHA FOUNTAIN:  Barbara, Eileen and I gifted 35 gift packs and baby blankets to the mothers and babies at the State Hospital today as part of the groups 67 minutes today. The staff was extremely happy that we were spreading the goodwill of a great man on his special day.
Thanks to all who made this delivery possible and to Joy for the beautifully packed gifts.

CLICK FOR BABIES is an initiative to help educate caregivers about normal infant crying, how to cope with crying and the dangers of reacting to crying in frustration by shaking or harming an infant.

The awareness month kicks off on November 1.  November 17 marks World Prematurity Day, and the Ruth Mailbag Group are asking everyone to help spread the word on the serious problem of premature birth. Wear purple to show your support!  Spread the word about the dangers of premature birth. To mark the occasion the Ruth Mailbag Group are collecting hats, booties and blankets for premature infants, your gift helps provide comfort and support to families with a baby in the NICU.

NEW HOSPITAL LISTING: Please join me in helping to send every baby born at Mosvold Hospital home in something warm and cosy. Most of the families who have babies there have nothing to bring their babies home in. That’s where we come in.

Name of Hospital: Mosvold Hospital

Address for donations: Private Bag X2211, Ingwavuma, 3968

Name and telephone number of staff liaison person who will receive donations: Nokuthula Shongwe (Tel 035 5910122)

Needs: Preemie Booties and hats (pink, blue and yellow)

General: Booties and hats for newborn babies

GROUP CO-ORDINATORS:

PAM CHADDERTON – SEWING CIRCLE: I have Trish Mc Callum sewing up pinafores, should have these back by Friday.  Janet Mill will be taking on some fabric and will get the group at Koekie Jacobsz to do some sewing.  I have sold 5 meters fabric and made R60.00.  I have about 5 meters Butcher’s linen (Black) which is very hard fabric for little kids so I am looking for a buyer for this fabric, should find a buyer very soon.  I am still trying to find more volunteers to do sewing.  I have been very busy with patterns and have not managed to do much sewing this last month but hope to get through more this month.
